What to Look For in a Pet-Friendly Rental
Not all "pet friendly" rentals are created equal. Before you book, here's what to check:
A fenced yard. This is the big one. A fully fenced backyard means you can let your dog roam without worrying about them darting into the street. It also means less stress for you at the end of a long beach day.

Ground floor or easy access. Stairs can be tough for older dogs or larger breeds. A single-level home or one with a private entrance makes everything easier.
Proximity to outdoor space. Look for rentals within walking distance of parks, trails, or open areas where your dog can stretch their legs properly.
Nearby beaches that allow dogs. Some Cape May area beaches allow dogs early morning or after 5pm. Check local rules for the specific beach nearest your rental.
Clear pet policies. Always read the fine print. Some rentals allow pets but charge a pet fee or limit the number or size of dogs. Knowing this upfront avoids surprises.
The Best Times to Visit Cape May With a Dog
Spring (April–May) is arguably the best time. The weather is warm but not scorching, beaches are quieter, and many seasonal spots are just opening up. Your dog will thank you for skipping the July heat.
Fall (September–October) is a close second. The water is still warm enough to swim, the crowds thin out after Labor Day, and the Cape May area is stunning in early autumn light.
Summer can work, but go early in the season (June) before peak crowds, and plan your beach visits for early morning or evening when dogs are typically permitted.
